A record number of twenty special modern house museums have joined the international Iconic Houses network in the first half of this year. Without exception pearls of modern architecture and architectural highlights to visit, experience and enjoy. We present you the first ten masterpieces now, and the second ten will follow next month.

Casa Salvati, Toscolano-Maderno, Italy
Casa Salvati, an original architect's house from 1972, was designed by Alberto Salvati and Ambrogio Tresoldi on the west bank of Lake Garda. In 2019 new owners renovated it with great care and respect to preserve the charm of the historical architecture. Experience it yourself: the house can be rented as holiday home!

The Hill House, Helensburgh, Scotland, UK
The Hill House is Mackintosh's domestic masterpiece (1904). Commissioned by Glasgow book publisher Walter Blackie, the up-and-coming architect and his wife Margaret Mackintosh Macdonald, an established artist and interior designer, worked collaboratively to create almost everything you see at the property; the building itself, the furniture and textiles.

Picker House, London, United Kingdom
In 1965 American cosmetics magnate Stanley Picker commissioned architect Kenneth Wood to design a luxury home in Surrey upon Thames. Picker House (1968), is an airy split level, post and beam construction with a beautiful mature garden. Unassuming from the front, the home opens into a spectacular space with one purpose: to display Picker's art collection.

Casa Navegna, Minusio, Switzerland
Architecture, art and nature lovers seeking a peaceful retreat will fall in love with the spectacular setting of Casa Navegna on the Swiss-Italian border. Built in 1929 by architect Ernst Bechstein, it was the first modernist house in the region. Today, Casa Navegna is considered one of Bechstein's most important projects in the style of Neues Bauen.

Cossitt Cottage, San Diego, CA, USA
Cossitt Cottage is one of a set of four adjacent and nearly identical homes designed by Irving J. Gill for Frederick and Mary Cossitt in 1910 in progressive Southern California. The Cossitt Cottages were designed as distinctly modern, non-ornamented cubes. Number 1 is available as a short term rental and is used by the Irving J. Gill Foundation for special events and tours.

Hotel Avion, Brno, Czech Republic
Designed by Bohuslav Fuchs, the 1928 Avion is one of Europe's narrowest hotels. In the heart of Brno, its footprint is just 8 x 34 metres. With 10 floors, 37 rooms and a ground-floor restaurant, the spectacular hotel highlights Fuchs' influence on Brno's urban planning. Home to a permanent exhibition about Fuchs, the Avion is a Czech icon of architectural innovation.

Haus Rietveld, Werkbundsiedlung, Vienna
Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld designed four terraced houses for the Werkbund housing estate in Vienna in 1931. Rietveld, known for the 1924 Schröder House in Utrecht, was one of the few foreign architects invited to design for the estate. Haus Rietveld was restored in 2015 by Tillner & Willinger Architects, complete with its original colour scheme.

Haus Rabe, Zwenkau, Germany
Haus Rabe is a total work of art of classical modernism in the Bauhaus style. It was planned and built between 1929 and 1931 by architect Adolf Rading. It served the married couple Erna and Erich Rabe and their daughter Gabriele Schwarzer as a family home and doctor's surgery. The interior of Haus Rabe includes several art works by Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer.

Museum of Sopot, Sopot, Poland
The Museum of Sopot is our fourth member house museum in Poland. In a historic villa, built for the Gdansk merchant Ernst August Claaszen in 1904, the museum is devoted to the culture and history of the city. It collects artistic and historical objects related to Sopot's history, including objects of material culture, artistic craftsmanship, photographs, and numismatic items.

Villa Trapenard, Sceaux, France
This modernist villa is designed by Mallet-Stevens in 1932 for his friend, Jacques Trapenard. It is the only work by Mallet-Stevens to demonstrate Le Corbusier's five points of modern architecture: pilotis, free design of the ground plan, free design of the facade, horizontal windows and a roof garden. The current owners are committed to sharing this gem to the public.
