Kurt Schwitters Exhibition
In Museum Dr8888 you will be offered a guided tour of the exhibition 'EIN PARADIES FÜR DIE NEUE KUNST Kurt Schwitters in Dr8888’ (a paradise for new art). Exactly 100 years ago Kurt Schwitters gave a famous performance in Drachten. He became world famous for his innovative collages and sound poems. Drachten and the houses in the Papegaaienbuurt (Parrot Neighbourhood) were an important source of inspiration for him. This Dada artist is also the creator of Merzbau: experimental buildings made from found and reused materials. The exhibition features exclusive works by Schwitters and artists who were inspired by him.

Van Doesburg Rinsema House and the Parrot neighbourhood
Following to the exhibition visit is the guided tour of the Van Doesburg Rinsema House. The house museum has been affiliated with Iconic Houses for several years. In September 1920, Theo van Doesburg met municipal architect Cornelis (Cees) Rienks de Boer in Drachten through his friend, shoemaker and poet, Evert Rinsema. At that time, the architect is working on the design of a complex of so-called middle-class homes. De Boer asks Van Doesburg for comments on his design and for colour advice for the interior and exterior of the homes. For Van Doesburg, it is the first major architectural assignment in which he can realize his new ideas about the integration of visual art and architecture. He produces his colour designs in detail on large drawings, many of which are now part of the collection of Museum Dr8888. The houses in Torenstraat, Oosterstraat and Houtlaan are causing such a stir in Drachten that they are repainted over time, so that they no longer distinguish themselves from other houses in the area. In 1988, all the houses got their original colours back. The (swear) name 'Papegaaienbuurt' has always remained.

Van Doesburg Rinsema House
Since 2018, museum house ‘the Van Doesburg Rinsema House has been housed at Torenstraat 3, in which Van Doesburg's color advice for interior and exterior has been applied entirely according to his designs. The surfaces of the house are provided with striking colours: red, yellow and blue. According to the original design, the walls are executed in whites and grays and form the starting point for the further colour distribution in the rooms and the outer facades. Floors and ceilings are also painted in different colours. Van Doesburg also designs the layout for the gardens. The house has been reconstructed after extensive colour and architectural research into Van Doesburg's original ideas. The Van Doesburg-Rinsema House is a valuable addition to the existing Style/Dada collection of Museum Dr8888 and honors the legacy of Theo van Doesburg, as well as his friends, the brothers Thijs and Evert Rinsema. In 2019, the Van Doesburg Rinsema House was granted the status of National Monument. It forms a very valuable addition to the existing Style/Dada collection of Museum Dr8888.

National Agricultural Winter School
The afternoon concludes with a visit and film screening in the former National Agricultural Winter School in Drachten, which is now a private house. The current owners are opening the building to us especially for this event. Here you can see the original stained-glass windows designed by Theo van Doesburg.
