Architect: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1951
Our host on site is Kristin Stone, Managing Director of The Pasadena Tour Company.
Join us for an expert led tour of one of the most iconic and groundbreaking modern buildings in the world: Mies van der Rohe's Edith Farnsworth House!
Director Scott Mehaffy gives a tour to our official tour partner Kristin Stone of The Pasadena Tour Company. We're proud to announce that architect Dirk Lohan, grandson of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, joined the Q&A following the tour. He oversaw restoration of the house twice: in 1972-1974 after it was first flooded, and following the flood of July 1996.
Designed by Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) in 1945 as a country retreat for Dr. Edith Farnsworth and built in 1951 along the Fox River in Plano Illinois, near Chicago, this sleek glass box residence of almost nothing is a vital part of American iconography: an exemplary representation of both the International Style of architecture as well as the modern movement’s desire to juxtapose the sleek, streamline design of Modern structure with the organic environment of the surrounding nature. It continued to be a private residence for over 50 years until Landmarks Illinois and the National Trust for Historic Preservation purchased it in 2003. Today it is owned and managed by the Trust and the site is open as a public museum.
