Edificio Holiday - Tropical Modernism in Decay
Built in 1956, Edificio Holiday is an architectural and social landmark for Recife, and was one of the city’s first skyscrapers. The building is a great example of tropical modernism in Brazil. It has 476 apartments spread over 17 floors and, since 1990, has suffered from structural problems and defaults among condominium owners, most of whom are from humble backgrounds. In 2019, Edificio Holiday was vacated due to structural and fire risk. At the time of the closure, the building was isolated with siding, which was stolen more than a dozen times. Without protection, the building is exposed to constant abandonment and vandalism and is in decay.
